Referees are an essential and often misunderstood part of the game. HCSA referees receive training certification from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) to ensure games are played according to the Laws of the Game (link to Laws).
Developing a large pool of referees is needed to allow HCSA to have sufficient coverage for all the games played throughout the season. Each team is encouraged to supply at least one volunteer referee for the season. Adults and teens over the age of 14 are welcome to join our referee team. No prior soccer knowledge or experience is needed to become a referee.
Just like players who begin playing soccer at an early age, they grow up and develop year after year. HCSA’s referee program is designed similarly. 1st year referees are initially assigned games in the non-competitive division. As they gain experience and obtain a greater understanding and comfort level with the game, referees are encouraged to try assistant referee responsibilities at the U10 level, followed by center opportunities. |

The training has proven to be effective as HCSA referee teams have received high praise from HCSA’s parent organization, District Five of Cal South. What makes the acknowledgement more meaningful is that HCSA referees are all volunteer community members. HCSA is very proud of this distinction!
The common objection I here is “I don’t know the game, I never played”. Well, truth be told, neither did I. I tried it, liked it and turned it into a great way to be involved in my children’s activities and give back to the community at the same time. It only takes a minimum of an hour per weekend, and that’s it.
All I ask is that you give it a try. Volunteer to be a referee, contact me today.
